Adaptation to Climate Change

Climate change continues to pose a serious threat to the livelihoods of pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya. Recurrent droughts, unpredictable rainfall, and shrinking grazing lands have made survival increasingly difficult for families that depend on livestock and natural resources.

The Smart Adaptation to Climate Change Programme by Pastoralist Education Smart Adaptation Programme (PESAP) promotes innovative, community-led solutions that enhance resilience and improve livelihoods in the arid and semi-arid regions of Marsabit County.

Under this programme, PESAP integrates smart education for better livelihoods, equipping community members—especially youth and women—with knowledge on sustainable farming, resource management, and environmental protection. Through capacity-building workshops and hands-on demonstrations, the organization empowers residents to adopt innovative approaches that mitigate the effects of climate change while sustaining their means of living.

PESAP also collaborates with local schools, youth groups, and women’s organizations to integrate climate education and environmental awareness into daily activities. By teaching children and youth about climate resilience and ecosystem protection, the organization helps build a generation of environmentally conscious leaders ready to safeguard their communities’ future.

The programme further focuses on capacity building for innovation, training communities to develop and apply local solutions that address climate-related challenges. By liaising with government agencies, NGOs, and development partners, PESAP strengthens collaboration to improve livelihoods, promote clean energy, and build climate-resilient communities among the underserved populations of Marsabit County.
